Detail Design & Factory Testing: Diesel Generator Power Supply Project

Electrical engineering and design for a diesel generation plant involving 4 containerised paralleled generators which were integrated into the normal power network of the facility for provision of permanent back-up power. 

The work involved the detailed engineering and design of the paralleling switchboard, integration of the generator power command controllers and the generator master control panel. The design also involved all interconnection cabling, earthing, foundation layout and reticulation routing. Protection grading study and calculation of protection settings were done using Digsilent software.

We undertake short assignments in providing an electrical engineer's advice and opinion as required by customers. In one case, damage to refrigeration controls occurred due a component failure in the power switchboard.

Electrical installations are prone to failure and the probable causes may be due to a lightning strike incident or a combination of factors like components reaching end of serviceable life, lack of maintenance, adding load past its original design capacity, extreme environmental conditions and introduction of harmonic producing loads, etc.

A methodical approach into incident investigation, application of analysis tools and physical measurement of electrical parameters lead to finding the root causes of failure.

Customers are provided with an engineer''s report summarising the findings,  the probable causes of failure and recommendations towards preventing similar failures from occuring again.
